What about those INTELLIGENT JW's? Did you have any in your cong'?

i remember as a child being impressed by several older 'brothers' who were well educated and articulate.

we had guys with degrees and one had a ph.d in some branch of physics - a professor.

now you know as well as i do that that level of education was, and still is, mightily discouraged by the wt but these guys had managed it somehow.. as an impressionable kid it put 'the truth' on a more secure footing for me, after all if these intelligent men could believe .

Yes, there was a college science lecturer in my congregation. Believing is largely down to desire to believe, not clear thinking.

One Reason Why I Worship the God of the Bible

while this may be construed as a rebuttal to nvr's thread re: why i post about atheism, that is not my intent.. it is my intent, however, to show how i developed a belief in and love for the god of the bible.. my paternal grandfather, who died before i was born, was a baptist preacher, so you could say i cut my teeth on the bible.

i loved having it read to me, and once i learned how, reading it for myself.

i'm convinced that spirituality runs deep in my blood.. i've always had such a strong sense of right and wrong that injustices make me literally sick.

Now, think about this. If the God of the Bible was as impotent as some make Him out to be, wouldn't some manage to escape this destiny? The consensus is that money talks, but the richest of the rich die just the same as the poorest of the poor.

There are no commuting of sentences, no payoffs, no unlawful flights to avoid prosecution or any such shenanigans in this case. God has remained true to His Word throughout the millenia since He first pronounced the Death Sentence on the human race.

Are you suggesting that the fact that we all die, and that the God of the bible said this would happen, is a reason for faith in the said book and God?

CO Visit: Why Such A Big Deal?

i wasn't raised a jw, but my wife was and everytime the co makes a visit to our congregation for a week - we had to make sure nothing was going to interrupt our meeting attendance.

vacation planned that week?

change it.

It's a big deal because it's supposed to be a big deal. As a believer, I couldn't help sensing it was a little shallow.

Witnesses are not and should not be judgmental?

firstly, forgive me for not being able to quote the article directly.

i noticed it yesterday while sitting in the sunday indoctrination session.

the article for next weeks watchtower study talks about viewing other people as jehovah views them.

I wouldn't say this is any indication of anything to do with disfellowshipping - they have been teaching contradictory morals for donkey's years.

Atheism - The next and final logical step

it is with great pleasure that i have found this forum, being an ex jw myself.

after leaving when i was 17 i still held some belief in the notion of a "god," even though i didn't believe in jw teachings, then when i was about 21 and thought about it properly; i realised that evolution is the only real alternative to all religion.

when you get to this point its very liberating to see that its not just jw's that are clouding and brainwashing peoples minds, but all religion, whether organised or not.

Welcome to the site from a fellow 'next and final logical step' taker. I agree it's comforting to see that JWism isn't the only wonky belief system pulling the wool over peoples' eyes.
